What is Skype for Business?
Skype for Business, previously called Lync, is an easy-to-use interface that allows users to communicate through text chat (instant messaging), voice calls, video calls and online meetings. You can use Skype for Business from nearly any Windows PC or mobile device (Lync/Skype for Business on Macs or mobile devices), anywhere in the world you have Internet access.

What is “Skype-to-Skype” communication?
Skype-to-Skype communication is a term we use to denote a direct connection between two Skype for Business users for the purposes of voice, video, chat and/or desktop sharing. Skype-to-Skype communication does not use the organization or public telephone network, so calls can only be made to other Skype for Business users.

Where can I get Skype for Business software?
For faculty and staff workstations, your department’s technology support staff should install the software component on your issued computer. For personal or home use on a PC, Skype for Business is part of Microsoft Office 2013/16. You can login to Office 365 portal and download.

Can I share sensitive data using Skype for Business?
Instant Messaging or Skype for Business file transfer should not be used to transmit sensitive data.

Does changing my email address affect Skype for Business?
Skype for Business uses your primary email alias (also known as a SIP address or Skype for Business address) for login and in place of a phone number for Skype-to-Skype voice calls. Changing your primary email address (Skype for Business login) can cause issues with Skype for Business’ “presence” function and with reoccurring Skype for Business online meetings you have already scheduled.
